GLOBAL WIND DAY: June 15, 2015

Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlightwindraintideswaves, and geothermal heat. Based on REN21‘s 2014 report, renewables contributed 19 percent to our global energy consumption and 22 percent to our electricity generation in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

Renewable energy resources exist over wide geographical areas, in contrast to other energy sources, which are concentrated in a limited number of countries. Rapid deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency is resulting in significant energy security, climate change mitigation, and economic benefits. In international public opinion surveys there is strong support for promoting renewable sources such as solar power and wind powerв At the national level, at least 30 nations around the world already have renewable energy contributing more than 20 percent of energy supply. National renewable energy markets are projected to continue to grow strongly in the coming decade and beyond.

Wind power is extracted from air flow using wind turbines or sails to produce mechanical or electrical power.  Wind power as an alternative to fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and uses little land. The net effects on the environment are generally less problematic than those from nonrenewable power sources. Wind power is very consistent from year to year but has significant variation over shorter time scales. It is therefore used in conjunction with other sources to give a reliable supply.

Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is organised by EWEA (European Wind Energy Association) and GWEC (Global Wind Energy Council). It is a day when wind energy is celebrated, information is exchanged and adults and children find out about wind energy, its power and the possibilities it holds to change the world. In association with EWEA and GWEC, national wind energy associations and companies involved in wind energy production organise events in many countries around the world.

MDS & KhanLex is promoting and celebrating days for our environment under our social responsibility.
